Mariele Neudecker, paysages atmosphériques

"Heaven, Sky" (2008)

"My work is attempting to challenge conventional ways of seeing and re-considers the dichotomy between nature and culture. The ideas underpinning my work grew out of a process of collecting images and concepts of predominantly Northern European Romantic Ideas - mingled with a desire to undermine and dissect those concepts. The use of technology in the work enables and destroys records of fiction and fact - in return science and technology become vehicles for the Sublime."

« Unrecallable Now » (1998); mixed media incl. 18 000 l of water solution, fiberglass
850 x 1950 x 120 cm. Henry Moore Fellowship commission installation at Spike Island, Bristol, UK;
installation Melbourne International Biennial, Melbourne, Australia (1999);
installation Yokohama International Triennale of Contemporary Art, Japan (2001).

"The Internal Slipping Out Into The World At Large"(2000). fluorescent fishing line, wood, mixed media,
230 x 180 x 190 cm. The fabricated worlds presented by Mariele Neudecker with their careful construction and simulated weather, seem to encapsulate the atmosphere and promise of the sublime imaginary moment in our memory. The landscapes created for her tank works, although not large, are representations and reproductions of the Romantic landscape by such iconic artists as Caspar David Friedrich, whose paintings allowed us to look down and across sublime vistas. Her tank pieces envelope our gaze, prickle our imagination and lure us in to see beyond the obvious – albeit enchanted – illusion, we know that this is no representation of reality.
